What I’ve come to realize is that I don’t like Frodo.

Book Three picks up with the fellowship companions that Frodo and Sam abandoned at the end of The Fellowship of the Ring while Book Four again resumes the journey with Frodo and Sam. That said, I drastically preferred the first half (Book Three) over the second (Book Four). I can also confirm the second book moves along much more quickly than the first with plenty of exciting plot points. So I ordered The Two Towers, thinking I’d probably do better with a physical copy over an ebook. I stand by my initial critiques - too much world-building (see: way too many names of things and people) + poor pacing (see: the first three chapters - the movie does this better) - but I was still curious about the goings-on of Middle-earth and could begrudgingly admit the journey is the destination, or however that quote goes. At the end of each chapter, I felt frustrated with how little had happened.īut then, days and weeks after I finished, I kept thinking about the characters and their journey. I found The Fellowship unnecessarily long, slow-moving, and incredibly hard to get through. After reading The Fellowship of the Ring, I didn’t think I’d stick with this series despite its indelible mark on the fantasy genre and literature in general. No choice, really.Īnother classic tackled. If you have already read volume one of the trilogy, you are going to read volume two. There is a growing sense that each will have a part to play in the coming conflict-a unique and indispensable part. Tolkien gives his characters distinct strengths which complement the abilities of their companions. The characters gather their strength for war with the forces of evil. The middle book of the trilogy covers a lot of ground, both geographically and in character development. The schemes of wizards, stewards and wraiths become more clear.

We meet the independent horsemen of Rohan, the foul orcs of Mordor, the proud men of Gondor, and the shades of past oath-breakers, eager for redemption. As the travelers disperse, readers become acquainted with the lands and peoples of Middle Earth. Others are taken captive, and pursued by would-be rescuers. Some seek Mordor and the forlorn hope of destroying the one ring in the volcanic fires that produced it.

In this part of the story, the original fellowship of nine travelers is fragmented. It follows The Fellowship of the Ring and is followed by The Return of the King.
